Veg Sandwich

Veg sandwich has become my favourite snack recipe. I dont own a sandwich maker so making a sandwich seemed so difficult for me because making sandwich without sandwich maker means the breads would fall apart which would upset me.

But ever since I found this method, It became so easy and sandwiches are easily customisable. You can make them with whatever you have. Read on to know how to make perfect sandwiches in a tawa.

What you will need:

  • Bread slices-2
  • Onion- 1
  • Tomato-1
  • Boiled potato-1
  • Butter- 1 tbsp
  • Tomato ketchup- 1 tbsp
  • Green chutney/ Mango mint sauce- 1 tbsp
  • Grated cheese- 2 tbsp

How To:

As I told, sandwiches can be customised to your choice. Let me mention few ingredients that I use based on availability.
  • Bread- white, brown, whole wheat, multigrain- preferably large so that it can hold more veggies and cheese.
  • Spread- tomato ketchup, green chutney, mayonnaise, sandwich spread, mango mint sauce, sandwich dressing
  • Vegetables- onion, tomato, capsicum, boiled potato and beetroot, cucumber, carrot
  • Cheese- any cheese that you like

1. Slice onion, tomato and boiled potato thinly. Grate cheese.
2. Trim the edges of bread. Take a bread slice. Apply butter on one side. Turn to the the other side. Apply tomato ketchup.

3. Arrange onion slices, tomato slices, boiled potato slices on the bread. Spread grated cheese on top.

4. Take the second bread slice. Apply butter on one side and mango mint sauce on other side.Place the bread above cheese with butter side facing the top.

5. Press the top of the bread firmly with a spatula. Heat a tawa. Place the sandwich on it. Then place a plate on top of the bread. Place a heavy weight on the plate(I have used mortar and pestle)

6. Cook it in low flame for a minute. Remove the weight. Remove the plate(Use a cloth to do so because it would have got heated up by now.)Flip it to the other side and repeat the same process.

Slice the sandwich into two and serve with tomato ketchup or any side dish of your choice.

French Toast

Some of you may wonder 'why a post on simple French toast?'. For someone like me who has been eating it without knowing its real name , it may be useful. Also I wanted to present the version with my own twist.

Until I watched the movie 'Queen', I never knew that French toast was not originated in France. Its interesting how it got the name French toast.

What you will need:

  • Bread - 4 slices
  • Egg-1
  • Milk- 100ml
  • Sugar- 3 tsp
  • Vanilla extract-  3-4 drops
  • Cinnamon powder- a pinch

How to:

1. Crack open the egg in a bowl. Add milk and sugar. Beat till everything mixes well. Add cinnamon powder and vanilla extract. mix well.

2. Heat butter or oil in a tawa. Dip each side of the bread in egg mixture not more than two seconds.

3.Place the bread on tawa and cook both sides.

You can serve it  as an evening snack or along with Spicy oats lassi for a complete meal.

P.S:

  • I have used multigrain bread here. Milk or sweet bread suits this recipe well.
  • You can increase quantity of sugar if you want it to be more sweet.
  • You can replace sugar with honey.
  • Bread soaked in egg - milk- sugar mixture and toasted is the basic french toast.
  • Vanilla extract and cinnamon powder are optional.
  • You can make stuffed French toast like French toast stuffed with nutella or cheese.
